Recent Survey Reveals Tech Lags Rest of Economy When Adding Jobs
According to a report by job placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, technology companies cut 140,696 jobs in the first three quarters of the year. That's up 18.8 percent from the three-quarter total in 2004.
The survey indicates that the pace of job cuts in the tech industry has risen nearly 20 percent in the last year although there are signs that employers in the technology sector are slowing down their pace of job reductions.

Ensuring Interview Success: 5 Interview Preparation Essentials
A job interview is your opportunity to show your prospective employer what you have to offer. If you do your homework and make a good impression, you can land the job of your dreams.
Here are some simple interview preparation tips to help you ace your interview:
1. Bonding with your interviewer - Breaking the ice with a smile and a strong handshake can go a long way. Be sure to get the interviewer's business card, and establish rapport by asking the following questions:
- How long have you been with XYZ company?
- What brought you to XYZ company?
- What were you doing before you came to XYZ company?
- What is your favorite part about working at XYZ company?
2. Do your research - show off your research skills with an intelligent question and answer session. Check out the company Web site and learn more about it. Read any news releases and the about us section, and be sure to know what products/services the company sells. Add to your knowledge by doing a Google search on the company. During the interview talk about the company's product/service and explain why you are interested in working for them.
3. Prepare for the question, "Tell me a little about yourself?" - this is your opportunity to sell yourself. Your answer should reflect your uniqueness. Be sure to reference your experience when talking about yourself. And don't forget to keep it brief.
4. Asking the right questions - feel free to bring a list of questions to the interview. Not only does this show the interviewer that you're prepared, but it also helps you maintain your focus. Here are some excellent questions to ask:
- What are the company's goals for this year?
- What do you like about this company?
- What brought you hear?
- What motivates you?
- What did you do before you were here?
- What is the tops sales person's daily schedule like?
- Why is that person the top sales rep?
- What is that person's defining personality traits?
- What does this person do that no one else does?
- What do you think it takes to be a top sales rep?
- What is the next step?
- Do you have any hesitations about moving forward with me? What are
they?
5. Close the interview like you would close a sale - Don't leave the interview without a yes, no, or firm future commitment. And always ask if you can schedule the next step right then and there.
